What You Need to Know About Upcoming Changes to Capital One Costco Mastercards

In October 2020, we announced that Capital One Canada and Costco mutually agreed to end the credit card relationship. CIBC will become the exclusive issuer of Costco credit cards in Canada and acquire the existing Canadian Capital One Costco Mastercard® portfolio, which is expected to be effective on March 4, 2022.

Please read the following information for more details on these changes. If you have further questions about your new credit card or the transfer of your account to CIBC, please visit cibc.com/costco. Or, for information about your current Capital One Costco Mastercard, contact Capital One at the number on the back of your card.

What You Need to Know About Changes to Your Account

On March 4, 2022, eligible Capital One Costco Mastercard accounts, along with the 16-digit credit card number, expiry date, CVV and PIN, will be transferred to CIBC. Credit card details aren’t changing.

You can continue to use your existing Capital One Costco Mastercard as usual until you receive your new CIBC Costco Mastercard in the mail. Your new card should arrive before August 31, 2022. Shortly after your new CIBC Costco Mastercard is activated, you and any authorized users on the account will no longer be able to use your Capital One Costco Mastercard.

Your credit limit will remain the same, and you’ll be able to use your card without interruption. In addition, you won’t need to update your pre-authorized payments (if applicable) with any merchants.

If you’re enrolled in Costco’s membership auto-renewal using your Capital One Costco Mastercard, this will be processed on your CIBC Costco Mastercard on your next renewal date after the portfolio transfers to CIBC. Your annual Costco membership fee auto-renewal settings will continue to be available through your Costco.ca account.

Your physical CIBC Costco Mastercard will also serve as your Costco membership card.

Until March 4, 2022, the terms and conditions of your Capital One Costco Mastercard account will continue to apply. After your account is transferred, CIBC will be the sole owner of your account, and your Capital One terms will no longer apply.

As a result of this transfer, the insurance benefits and the Price Protection Service included with your Capital One Costco Mastercard will end at 11:59 p.m. ET on March 3, 2022. More details regarding the continuation of insurance benefits and the Price Protection Service for purchases paid with your card on or before March 3, 2022 are included on this page under “About Insurance Coverage on Your Account” and in your current Certificate of Insurance.

For eligible Capital One Costco Mastercard customers, you’ll receive a letter in the mail that will provide full details about what to expect on the account transfer to CIBC.

About Making Payments to Your Account

You can continue to reduce any outstanding balance on your account by making payments to Capital One until March 3, 2022 at 11:59 p.m. ET, and after this date, to CIBC. As of March 4, 2022, interest will continue to accrue on your outstanding balance with CIBC, as set out on the CIBC Summary of Rates and Fees mailed to you.

After March 3, 2022, you’ll need to change your bill payment/payee information from Capital One to “CIBC Costco Mastercard” to make an online payment to CIBC by following these steps:

  1. Log in to your bank’s online banking site.
  2. Add “CIBC Costco Mastercard” as a new payee using your 16-digit credit card number as your account number.
  3. Make your payment to CIBC.

If you’re enrolled in the Capital One pre-authorized debit service (also known as Auto Pay), this service will end on March 3, 2022.

About Cash Back Rewards

Capital One will mail a cash back coupon in January 2022 to eligible cardholders for cash back earned during the 2021 calendar year. Your account is eligible as long as it’s open and in good standing, which means that it’s not past due, fraudulent, restricted, or part of a consumer credit counselling program or bankruptcy. Coupons won’t be available in a digital format.

When you receive your cash back coupon, you can redeem it at any Costco warehouse in Canada. If your cash back coupon has an expiry date, you’ll see this date printed on your coupon.

Any past coupons issued by Capital One that have not yet been redeemed and have not yet expired can still be used at any Canadian Costco warehouse.

Cash back earned with your Capital One Costco Mastercard from January 1, 2022 to March 3, 2022 will show on your CIBC statement in the Rewards Summary on your March or April 2022 CIBC statement.

You’ll receive one cash back gift certificate from CIBC in January 2023 for all cash back earned in 2022. This cash back gift certificate will include rewards earned on both the Capital One Costco Mastercard (earned from January 1, 2022 to March 3, 2022) and the CIBC Costco Mastercard (earned from March 4, 2022 to December 31, 2022).

Cash back gift certificates will be issued by CIBC every January as long as your account is open and in good standing and you have a current Costco membership as of December 31 of the prior year.

About Your Statements
