How to use Google Pay

You can use Google Pay at participating merchants wherever you see the Google Pay or contactless payment symbols.

Pay in a store

  1. Unlock your phone and hold it near the contactless payment terminal. 
  2. Wait until you see a check mark or a “done” icon. This confirms the payment went through.

Pay online

For online purchases that support Google Pay, choose the Google Pay option at checkout and follow the on-screen instructions.

How do I return an item that I bought using Google Pay in a store?

  1. Make sure your default card is the same one used to make the purchase.
  2. Similar to paying, unlock your phone and hold it near the contactless payment terminal to receive the refund.

I lost my card. Can I continue to use Google Pay?

If your card is lost or stolen, you should report it immediately – contact us. We’ll cancel your card and send you a new one. In most cases, you can continue to use Google Pay while you wait for your replacement card to arrive.

Why is my card being declined with Google Pay?

There are several reasons why a card may be declined with Google Pay:

  • There’s a limit on the transaction
  • You have insufficient funds in your account
  • The card details may not have been entered correctly in the Google Wallet app
  • The Android version on your device doesn’t support Google Pay and needs to be updated
  • The merchant terminal doesn’t support contactless payments
  • You’re not in a supported country or region
