All about the Close to Limit Alert
We’re on a mission to help our customers succeed with credit. That’s why in Spring 2022, we’ve launched our new Close to Limit Alert. Here’s everything you need to know about it.
What is the Close to Limit Alert?
Starting spring 2022, all Capital One customers with a valid email on file will be automatically signed up for our new Close to Limit Alert. This alert will notify you when the available credit limit on your account is below the Close to Limit Alert amount. This is a new requirement in the Bank Act to ensure customers are aware of when they're nearing their credit limit to avoid over limit fees (if applicable) and help them succeed with credit.
What is the Close to Limit Alert amount?
The Close to Limit Alert amount is the pre-set amount at which we’ll send you a Close to Limit Alert. This will let you know that the available credit on your account is lower than the amount set in your account. By default, the Close to Limit Alert amount will be set at $100 unless you have specified a different amount in online banking.
How do I change my Close to Limit Alert amount?
To change your Close to Limit Alert amount:
- Sign in to online banking through an internet browser (not through the app).

- Go to the Balances and Credit section.

If you’re not enrolled in online banking and have unsubscribed from this alert, you can resubscribe to it by signing up for online banking and logging in to your account.
How often will I receive this alert?
When your available credit falls below the Close to Limit Alert amount, we’ll send you an email to let you know. You may receive another alert after this initial alert.
If you make a payment to your account that increases your available credit to above the Close to Limit Alert amount, the alert will reset. If your available credit drops below your Close to Limit Alert amount again, you’ll receive another alert.
Can I get this alert as an SMS or push notification?
At this time, there aren’t push notifications or SMS alerts available for the Close to Limit Alert.
What if I’m already enrolled in the current available credit alert?
If you’re already enrolled in available credit alerts before the launch of this new alert, your current "Available credit below" amount that you’ve customized in online banking will be used for the new Close to Limit Alert. If you’re currently enrolled in available credit SMS alerts, you’ll now only be enrolled in the Close to Limit Alert via email after its launch. Available credit SMS alerts will also be discontinued after the launch of the new alert.
